This section is devoted to true stories and snippets of life on the opal fields. At the time they were just day to day normality. Later, in hindsight, they were special in some way. There are so many of these opal mining stories that one day Peter plans to put them into a book.

Little Girl Lost Mintabie

My mining partner Robert and his wife June had a lovely little toddler named Taran. Their camp was about half a kilometer from the opal fields at the back of Mintabie.

Robert and I were working a claim near the water tank. We were both underground when we heard June arriving somewhat in a hurry with the horn blasting.

Abdullah Chan Gentleman Opal Buyer

Abdullah Chan was a dealer in rough opal. He spent his life buying and selling opal. In later years he spent his time between China and Lightning Ridge, he was one of the biggest buyers of rough opal at Mintabie Opal Fields.
