Boulder Opal is the term used for opal that occurs in ironstone boulders. The opal infills cracks within the boulder creating a unique type of opal. Peter had two boulder opal mines in Queensland. His Rainbow opal mine provides a lot of the boulder opal in Mineshaft. This has been cut into stones and also used for carving unique collectibles. Click on the images to see a full size picture.

Boulder opal carving of frog family. There is quite a lot of good quality boulder opal in this piece and we could have cut gemstones from it. This boulder opal carving has been master carved. It measures 18cm by 10 cm by 8cm. There are 5 frogs in the carving. The pictures do not do justice to the opal or the carving and it is far more beautiful when you see it.
